Short Review: Steaming hot dumplings - both veg and non-veg. This is a food speciality of Nepal. Really great alternative if you are bored with the usual oily rich fast food. Tastes great and a lot healthier than most junk food.
Ambiance: A typical fast-food cafe, usually full of college students and young professionals. Great for take away if you are in a rush.
Pricing: Rs. 36 for veg and 45 for chicken (for a plate of 6 momos).

Blue Nile restaurant
Monday, August 21, 2006
Address: 4, bund garden road, Pune 411001.
Directions: Near Pune club, on the way to Chowpati (nucleus mall).
Phone: 2625238
Food: Excellent kababs and biryani. Probably the best no-frills, reasonably priced kabab place in Pune. If you are a kabab lover on a budget, this is the place to go. If you aren't sure about taking someone there, just call and take away.
Ambiance: Some say it has an old world charm, some think it's not great. Well, simply put, you don't go here expecting a grand hotel with polished mirrors. Go here for it's awesome food and owners who are real good hosts. They have separate seating area for families.

Flags restaurant Pune
Address: Next to INOX movie theater, Bund Garden Road, Pune - 411 001
Phone: 26141617
Food: The best multi-cuisine restaurant in Pune. You'll get everything from chinese to italian to tandoor. I've only had chinese, italian and mexican so far. It was all very good. If you have a big group and everyone wants to eat food from a different continent, this is the place to go.
Ambiance: Dimly lit, always crowded. Prepare to wait for half an hour at least on a weekend.
Tip: If you don't get place for a long time, SISA next doors is usually lot less crowded and is a decent compromise.

Mainland China - Authentic Chinese cuisine in Pune
Saturday, August 19, 2006
Address:
City Point,
Gr. Floor, Dhole Patil Road,
Boat Club,
Pune - 411 001.
Phone: (020) 56013030
Directions: http://www.mainlandchinaindia.com/pune.htm
Website: http://www.mainlandchinaindia.com
Ambiance: Great outdoor seating. Indoor seating is also good for a more formal dinner.
Tip:The service in the garden is often quite slow.
Food: Undoubtedly the best Chinese food I've had in Pune. All the fans of desi chinese food, you've been warned - it is NOT the spicy "Indianized" chinese food. :) It's a more bland (like the "real" chinese food that chinese people eat). Pretty much everything I've tried on the menu has been good. If you are in a mood for a different soup, try their lemon coriender soup.

Thousand Oaks Restaurant, Camp, Pune
Address: 2417 East street, Volga Chowk, Camp, Pune-411001
Phone: 26343194
Ambiance: Pretty good music, NOT a very quiet place if you sit indoors.
Tip: If you are a non-smoker, you may not want to sit indoors. If you do, you'll walk out smelling of cigarette smoke.
Also, they have valet parking so don't worry about finding a parking spot.
Food: Punjabi food was good. The garlic/cheese bread was awesome! Lahori chicken is great, but quite hot. There's a lounge and disc inside, the music was good. Service was good. We couldn't get place in the garden but I thought that would've been a better experience.

Food: Italian, Mexican, Indian
Price Range: Around Rs. 400 for a three course dinner for two.
Ambiance: It's like an outdoor cafe, usually packed on weekends. If you are not in a mood to wait, just call ahead and pick up your food. I find the food worth the wait though.
Tip: Their desserts looked very tempting - though I have never tried them.

Banana Pizza & Baskin Robbins, Aundh
Monday, August 14, 2006
Baskin Robbins, Aundh, Pune
Phone: 020 56092555 (yes, you must dial 020 even from within Pune).
short review: This is no pizza hut or dominos, but they certainly serve different pizza. Chicken Wings were not very good, especially if you know what the real thing tastes like. The pizza itself was good and not the standard dominos or Pizza Hut taste. Veg pizza was better than the chicken pizza. Of course, having Baskin Robbins in the same shop doesn't hurt!

Capsicum restaurant - Baner Rd. Pune
S.No. 265/5, Baner 411045
Phone: 27291133
Food: Thali, punjabi, chinese
Prices: Around Rs. 200-250 for a three course dinner for two.
Ambiance: Not great - looks good from outside.
Short Review: This can be good value for money if you know what to order. The ambiance is not all that great. Here you'll mostly find young techies from the software companies around. The punjabi food is good, chinese food is not good. Thali is very popular and good value for money. It's a decent place for a takeaway, not the best place to dine in. I personally don't like the plastic feel of the plates at all.
Buyer beware: Some of the punjabi dishes are really hot (spicy), so ask before you order.

Bombay Brasserie Pune
City Point, Dhole Patil Road, Pune 411001
Phone: 56011101, 56011102
Food: Undoubtedly the best kababs in town.
Price: Around Rs. 600 for a three course lunch for two.
Directions: From Le Meridian, go towards Nagar Road-Ruby Hall, turn left onto Dhole Patil Road, go to the very end and turn left. The restaurant is on your right.
Short Review: If you are a Kabab fan, it doesn't get any better than the Kabab Factory buffet in the evening. Unfortunately this buffet has become a very popular party spot - they rent the whole buffet area for parties in the evening. So if you want to go for the buffet, be smart, call ahead.
I recommend: If you love Kababs (I do), go there even if the buffet is not on. Just order whatever you like from the Kabab menu. Chakori Kabab, Pudine ki seekh are my favorite. If you like heavy sweets, I've heard good things about the phirni. For light sweet eaters, fresh fruit salad with ice cream is good.
Buyer Beware: Main course arrives rather slow. If you are ordering main course, order it right after the Kababs, or better still with the starters.
New Tip (Apr 20, 2007): If you go there for the Kabab buffet, insist on sitting outside in the garden. They do serve buffet inside, but the service is excruciatingly slow. If you are like some of my friends, you'll end up feeling hungry and fed up of waiting.

SISA - Some Indian Some Asian
G1, Metropole, Next to Inox Multiplex, Bund Garden Road, Pune - 411 001
Phone: 56229945
Food: The name says it all.
Ambience: Pretty good for a quiet dinner. Not very crowded (like Flags next-door).
Rates: Rs. 500-600 for a three course dinner for two.
Short Review: We went at around 8:30pm and found ourselves to be the only customers there! It is a dimly lit place with decent interior. Soft music (Kenny G) was playing, which suited the mood well. Another night, with a different set of friends, it would have appeared too depressing perhaps! Any ways, food was good, service was decent. Kinda pricy for the quality of food.
I recommend:Sheesh Tauk (this was the highlight of our dinner), Tom Yum soup.
The Sheesh Tauk is a mild, mediterranean Kebab dish which was a welcome change along with the spicy chicken. The Hummus was quite tasty. I think the mediterranean food there holds promise.
Buyer Beware:Chicken in garlic sauce was VERY hot and we were not warned.
Nothing spectacular and nothing you do not get in a regular desi chinese place.
NO NO:Jalapeno poppers were a complete disaster. Obviously neither the chef nor anyone on the management has ever seen or tasted the real thing. God, forgive them for they don't know what they are selling ;). This was more of a cottage cheese + all purpose flour with regular indian mirchi chopped fine made into inch size balls and fried. D-UH!
