Multi-cuisine (Italian and thai)
Ambience: Feel like eating in a room..There is no decor on the walls, nothing to break the monotony of the whitewashed walls. The tables are placed like a wedding hall, and there is a split level seating with a lounge kind of seating upstairs, causing a tunnel like feeling.

The name sounded exotic and it was convenient, so we stopped by on a Saturday evening. First, the place does not have a washbasin!! Doesn't PMC require you to at least have a washbasin ?? The menu is a little here and here. They have Italian soups and Thai starters, like most multi-cusine restaurants have to have these days.

The roast bell pepper soup was really good, Neeraj loved it, while I was searching for a place where the kids could wash their hands! The pita and hummus was quite good.. so was the Chicken Satay. The main course was some chicken with steamed veggies and rice. I think they took the name of the restaurant too far. Thyme, oregano on the overload. Crushed, dried pieces everywhere.. No Olives to be seen anywhere :) The herbs start to get on your taste buds after a while.
Neeraj had chicken in bbq sauce. After being assured it was boneless chicken, he ran into a "boney, chewy piece" that just put him off. Again, the bbq sauce was the Hickory brand, (Might as well buy it at Fine Foods in Aundh and make your own bbq chicken).

All in all, service is still new. After I asked for water to wash the kid's hands, it took them ten minutes or so ..when they did give it, it came in a soup bowl!! :D I should really focus on other things, but can't get over it..

It seemed like a better place for takeaway as the food was really not too bad, but the service needs a whole lot of improvement.
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

Siiip at Prabhat Road

Location: This place is at the Prabhat Road police Chowky, in the same building as Ghodke Mithai Wale and Titan Eye+. I am not sure it would eat the whole thing without guilt. The garlic bread was great as well. But the same thing. Its loaded with butter. Of course, you can always be a "don't care" :)

This place is still not very crowded, we had no wait at all. Step out on the deck and you will be amazed. The wooden flooring, the service, the view.. absolutely amazing.

The restaurant inside serves Indian food (Which I am told is quite good). They also have a lunch buffet at about 290 rs. They serve Italian-ish food on the deck outside. The starters, soup and pizza was awesome. Main course was good for most, except the lamb steak (some similar name, I don't remember) was chewy. I am not sure if it was overcooked, or that I ate it after a while.

Mashed potatoes to go with it were divine. I am guessing the chewy meat was a blooper. The veggie stuff like pasta was really good. Pizza was a thin crust pizza and a welcome change. (authentic thin crust)

Pricing about 400 rs for the main course, 100 rs for the soup. Portions are quite huge. We had to skip dessert.

They have an amazing bar section with a psychedelic bar and even better view :) They also have a separate section for private parties for a group of 40. It is a nice place if you want to impress your friends/family/coworkers.

Tip: Carry a shawl or sweater if its a little cool. It definitely is cooler up there. Not really a place for kids, since most of the guests are there was a quiet dinner or business dinners. Your screaming kids will embarass you..
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

shraavan F. They didn't seem quite ready for business at the time.
The pizza was good, what you would expect at Papa John's. The soups are quite poor in quality, seem like they come straight out of the instant soup cans. Salads are good.
Service left a lot to be desired. They seemed to forget parts of our order. The Papa John's near Ruby Hall was a much better experience overall.

Tip: Don't forget to order the garlic breadsticks. Awesome stuff!
Their kid's meal includes a "Happy Face Pizza" which has "Pepperoni eyes". We were upset that they didn't inform us while ordering. It turned out that it was chicken pepperoni after all!
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

Magnolia Restaurant - Aundh

Address: New DP Road, Aundh Pune 411007

Phone:020 400 58282

Food Type: Veg + Non-Veg - Chinese, Thai

Three Course Dinner for two: Rs. 500 - 550

Review:
They serve a mix of Chinese and Thai food. I can't really say either the chinese or the thai food is authentic. It is quite tasty though. The service is good. If the weather is good I would surely recommend the outdoor seating. The indoor seating is somewhat crowded.
This restaurant is really hard to locate, so refer to the google map above.

Recommendations:
Thai Chicken Chilli Basil was good. Although the exterior of the restaurant doesn't make a great impression on a passer by, the interior is equally well done. I would surely call it a "Familly Restaurant". The food is very good. It's almost as good as Tareef in Aundh. Tareef's preparation is a bit better, but for residents of Baner, this is surely a very good alternative. Nice and clean inside, it is surely going to be quite popular in Baner.

Recommendations:
Jehangiri Murgh Shorba, Tandoor/Kebabs in general. The food is much better than when it was Kareems. The ambience is good, a little over the top when it comes to the decor. The seating area is quite small, one might call it cozy. :) You almost feel like you are sitting in a cave. The kitchen has a glass window and you can see the tandoor and the kebabs grilling.

The food is typical Punjabi. They have heavy copper plates and glasses. Not sure if I like them or not :). I loved the kebab platter (enough for 4 adults). Small selection of soups. I would pass the soups as it is nothing spectacular. As for the entree, we have tasted almost all the chicken curries and loved all. The garlic nan is awesome. A little fatty ;), almost like eating garlic bread.. The Kheema naan can be skipped. The stuffing was too dry and plain. Neeraj tried some Raan curry when he went on his own and said it was different and very well made.

The veg curries were also decent. The portions are medium sized. The paan offered along with your bill is such a thoughtful gesture. It comes as a very pleasant surprise. :) . I think some part of the charm of the restaurant also lies in the owner who takes time to talk to each guest.

A typical meal for two would cost 450-500 rs.
Overall a good experience with good food!

Update: they don't take reservations from Friday to Sunday.
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

Capsicum - Baner

Address: Baner Road. About half a KM before Symantec
Phone:

Review:
This restaurant has a catch name and decent looking interiors and thats it!! Step in and you will realize how tacky this place is. I am not turning up my nose because it is not expensive. Even the cheapest places have excellent food and decent level of cleanliness. My main complain is that the place is just sooo dirty.. the tables have dirty tablecloths, dirty linen. I mean you could place bets on when it was washed last.

The food is the typical run of the mill desi chinese and punjabi. Portions are small and the prices are also reasonable. Tad bit more expensive than the desi chinese stalls, but then you also get to eat in an A/C. The food is spicy and hot. Nothing much to write about. They also serve non-veg.
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

The Ship, KalyaniNagar.

Address: The Ship
Fortaleza, Central Avenue
Kalyani Nagar, Pune 411006

Directions: This restaurant is behind the Kalyani Veg restaurant opposite Gold Adlabs. It reminds you of a sports bar in the US. The booth seating is very spacious, unlike most places where they try to squeeze in as many tables possible in the given area. You can actually get into your seat and out of it without having to push the table back.

The menu is different. It features a lot of fish, lamb and beef dishes. We started with a Greek chicken soup which was a delicate chicken and rice based broth. It was hard to dish the out the soup beyond the first few spoons. The soup might be a letdown to some because it is quite a subtle dish with the strongest flavor as rice.

For appetizers, we had hummus with Pita bread which was good and very close to the authentic taste (or the American authentic that we are familiar with).

I had Morrocan Chicken with Kabsa rice at rs. 325. This was the best dish amongst all the things we tried. It has two skewers of chicken kebabs with a strong barbeque sauce and cinamon. This was again a very unique flavor which may need some getting used to. The rice was good. The portions are on the smaller size, I guess not really small, but when you pay that much, you sort of expect to get more WFM. :)
Neeraj had some pomfret with garlic butter over mashed potatoes. Again at rs. 425, it was a steep price for one fillet of fish. The taste was good, but the price lingers at every bite :)

Overall it is a good place to entertain "foreign guests" esp if your company is paying :D
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

Back after an short hiatus..

We have been busy and lazy :) Not an excuse, because we have been eating out and trying out new restaurants. Its on the left, you should see a board for Natekar sports once you go past the first entrance of Chroma. Skips is right outside Natekar sports. It is kind of hard to locate. See the map below.

Map:

Food Review: This is a small joint owned by a passionate chef. Your basic sandwich place with a twist. They also have turkey, ham on the menu and the sandwiches are about 40-70 rs a piece. Usually not seen in India. They use the bigger bread slices, so one sandwich can fill you up quite well. Note: Neeraj ate two and I had one and half. (we were famished!!)

The chicken burger is awesome. The patty is much different as compare to what you get in MacD or even Venky's burger patty. This has a more smokey flavor, reminds you of the burgers in US. It took a good 10 minutes to get the burger and it was well worth the wait. If you are expecting Subway kind of speed, don't! Each burger had a warmed patty, toasted bread, veggies, pickle, optional cheese, mayo.

For the second round, I opted for the ham and Neeraj wanted something veg. Sharayu (the owner) offered to make something veggie for him. Again it took a good ten minutes.

This sandwich was extremely good too. The ham, like most cured meat, was a little salty. Neeraj does not like that. His veggie sandwich was again great. It was a tasty combination of veggies with seasoning.

Ask them to go easy on the mayo and butter, or else the sandwiches are pretty greasy. All sandwiches are served with potato wafers (not the chips/fries). We also tried the mango milkshake, can't go wrong there. You could pass the watermelon juice.

We were told that they plan to start home delivery soon.

The chef makes sandwiches with a lot of passion and precision. I would strongly recommend this for someone who loves a quick lunch/ dinner (but not in an hurry! - plan to wait about 10-15 minutes for your food)

Tip: They are closed on Mondays!
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

HAKA - Chinese food

Address: 1195/6A, Opp. Deen Dayal Hospital, Fergusson college Road, Shivaji Nagar, Pune 411014. If you would like a conversation, please sit inside. (They have nice decor and seating on the first floor).

Food Review: After hearing that this place is owned by the same folks who own Mainland China and Sigree, we decided to try this out. First impression was that they have a really nice seating area with good cutlery and plates. The service lives up to their title phrase, "Real Chinese, Real Quick". The menu is fairly small with a little dabbling into Thai food as well.
The next thing to notice is that the prices are very reasonable. Almost everything is between 40-80 rs. If you go for fish or shrimps, the prices are close to a 100rs.

We ordered Chicken Haka noodles and the soup was served in less than 5 minutes. The soup tasted a lot like the Manchow soup in most places. There was an obvious taste of celery, but surprisingly, it complemented the soup well.

For appetizers, we ordered Fish Chilli Fry. This also was served in 5 minutes. This was a spicy, sumptuous dish. There was the typical garlic/ginger/red chilli sauce with deep fried chicken along with some spring onion, bell pepper and again, celery. Again, it complemented the taste.

Main course, we had shrimps in sweet and spicy sauce (Tasty with pineapple chunks) and Quick Braised Chicken sichuan style with veg fried rice. We were ordering more than what we typically eat, but the portions here are smaller than what you are used to in similar places. The food is very typical desi-chinese. Its actually like eating "tapari chinese" in a posh setting.
The dimsums sound good. Something to try next time.

The bill took a long time to arrive, contrary to the food. All in all, its a good place with good and cheap food for when you are famished or on the go..

A typical meal for two (non-veg) will cost somewhere close to 350 rs. A veg meal should cost about 250-275.

They have free home delivery.
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

Silk Route - Koregaon Park.

Address: 357/1, Pingale Corner, Bank Lane, Koregaon Park, Pune 411001

Phone: +91-20-26135793, 9822448730, 9890318381
Directions: From Koregaon Park road, take North Main Rd. towards German Bakery. For those new to the area, Koregaon Park Rd is the road that goes from Hotel Blue Diamond to Sangam Bridge (Nagar Rd). But don't worry - Silk Route has dedicated 4 wheeler parking spots in an empty lot opposite the restaurant. Make sure you are well covered if you plan to sit out at the mosquitoes are a menace just like any other garden in Pune.

Ambiance: Good for a nice dinner. We sat in the garden and there are about 6-7 tables in the garden. We reached at about 9 pm on a Saturday night and were able to find a place right away.

Food Review: We were drawn to Silk Route with the promise of Sushi and we were totally impressed. It has been almost a year and half since I had sushi and since this place is touted as the only Sushi-serving restaurant in Pune, we had to go. We ordered Hosomaki/California Roll Sushi and we were amazed to get perfect wasabi and soya sauce with the pickled ginger. The ginger was a little thick and strong tasting than what we have had before. The Sushi itself was fresh, tasty and made in front of you at a counter in the garden. The sushi was 400 rs.

Encouraged by the Sushi, we ordered a Korean crab and Asparagus soup which was also very tasty. The asparagus seemed like it was the canned kind. It was really not necessary. This was at about 100 rs.

For main course, we ordered the Hibachi(Japanese style teppenyaki with chicken with a side of shrimps or Lamb) We ordered shrimps. Teppenyaki comes with Miso soup as well as rice/noodles. The noodles might be a little dry for some. The chicken was plenty for the portion and also included about 4-5 shrimps. If you go there with full appetite, you might need one more dish. This was 300 rs.

For dessert, they had an array of desserts ranging from fried icecream, to the fried bananas, to the shaved ice and syrup indonesian dessert. We did not try any for the lack of time.

The menu boasts of Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese food. If the others are as good as the Japanese food, Silk Route has found a new fan and a regular.
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

McDonald's at Aundh

Food: well, everyone knows I guess! The building is called "Stellar Enclave".

Special Tips: They have a Drive Through.... yes, a Drive Through - for the fast and furiously hungry :)

Phone: 020 25882582
Home Delivery: (9522)66000666
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

Mainland China - Senapati Bapat Rd

Address:
ICC Tech Park, Next to Pyramid mall,
Senapati Bapat Rd.,
Pune - 411 016.
Phone: (020) 66207777
Directions: http://www.mainlandchinaindia.com/pune.htm
Website: http://www.mainlandchinaindia.com

Ambiance: Good for a nice dinner. The dim-sum lounge is a nice change from the routine.

Tip:The service at this outlet of mainland china is VERY slow and in my experience quite poor. That is quite different from the one in camp, though the food quality is the same. They offer chinese jasminte tea (on the house), which most of the times does not arrive until you are ready for desserts and they'll serve it only if you insist! On weekends, the wait is usually an hour and then the service is quite clumsy. You'll see many frustrated customers. Unless it's very close to you (unfortunately it is for me :) just go to the one on D.P. road.

Food Review:See my review of MainLand China on Dhole Patil Rd.

Edited to add: I was recently there again and the service, quality of food has improved tremendously. However, things did start slacking once the people poured in. I guess on a weekday, you are better off reaching at about 8:15 pm. I am still not brave enough to go there on a weekend.
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

Wrap Around - Veg/Non-veg wraps

Address: Nyati Millenium, Viman Nagar

Phone: 32938990

Directions: From Nagar Road, (form Nagar going towards Pune) take a right turn at the Viman Nagar arch entrance. Its more like a store, very well lit.
Food Review: The menu is very basic. Curry- Masala and Tawa. Chicken lollipops, fried tangdi and whole grilled chicken. Eggs - Curry, omlette. You also get roti to go with your chicken. The meals are sold in portions of: 1 plate- about 250 gms, half - half a kg, and full - 1kg. We bought the tawa curry which was not at all like a Tawa bhaji. It was a nice gravy with loads of coconut and curry leaves. Also, tried Chicken lollipops which were quite tasty.
The tangdi fry at rs. 3o for two pieces seemed like a popular fare though we did not have it.

A meal for two can be managed under 100 rs. If you are huge eaters, this can be done in a couple of hundred rupees.

Tip: There is not much place to stand while you are waiting to pick up your order. If you plan to eat there, be prepared to be perched on a tiny bench and hold you plate in your hand. Also, parking is almost impossible to find. Though, you could have someone in the car/on the two wheeler while you go pick up your food. Be prepared for a ten minute wait.
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

IL Fungo Magico - Italian and Mexican Restaurant

Address: Shop No. 18, Lane 6, Vrindavan Society, Meera Nagar, Koregaon Park, Pune 411001.

Phone: 26122461

Directions: It is in lane #6, right next to Malaka Spice. It's like real Italian pizza (from Italy, not US ;-). That's probably why one would go to this place.

Tip:The minestrone soup is just as non-Italian as the pizza is authentic Italian. I'm not sure why they call it Minestrone! It was a yellow (yes, y e l l o w!) broth with pieces of cauliflower floating in it. The waiter tried to explain how it is the correct original recipe, but when we insisted, he was courteous enough to offer us Tomato soup at no extra charge.

Have not tried the Mexican food here. It's a bit spicy (as the name suggests, duh!).
Ambiance: Nice, cafe type ambiance, certainly not quiet. Very clean. Perfect for a group of up to 6 people. They have many small-medium tables.
Price Range: Avg. Rs.250 per person
Food Review: Well, what can I say... this is one place that lived up to all its hype. In one word, awesome!. The best of the evening was "Canh Trung soup" - A fresh tomato soup with sliced chilli lemon grass. The "Panang laksa" fish soup was also good. Sea food seems like their speciality. If you are in the mood for something less spicy, "Grilled fish in banana leaves" is great for you. If you want something even less spicy (and you like mushrooms), the "Three aunties and grandmothers" is for you.

Roti Jhala was a good, interesting dish - a light fluffy pancake.
Roti Canai was a total disappointment - it was just like regular desi roti/naan.

They also have really great mocktails. Try the "Knight in white satin" - coconut cream and pineapple juice with ice cream. Yum yum...:)
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

Supreme's Corner - Pav Bhaji pizza and pulav - J.M. Of course, they serve ice cream and soft drinks.
Short Review: This is a very old, very popular joint (I've been eating here for the last 20 years at least). In my opinion, it's the best Pav Bhaji in Pune. The place is like an outdoor cafe, not the cleanest place around, but quite decent. The pizza is desi pizza with Amul cheese, not the kind you get at Pizza Hut. I love it all the same. The pulav is also a hot favorite.
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://pune-restaurants.blogspot.com/2006/09/supremes-corner-pav-bhaji-pizza-and.html' title='Supreme's Corner - Pav Bhaji pizza and pulav - J.M. This is a food speciality of Nepal. Really great alternative if you are bored with the usual oily rich fast food. Tastes great and a lot healthier than most junk food.
Ambiance: A typical fast-food cafe, usually full of college students and young professionals. Great for take away if you are in a rush.
Pricing: Rs. 36 for veg and 45 for chicken (for a plate of 6 momos).
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

Blue Nile restaurant

Address: 4, bund garden road, Pune 411001.
Directions: Near Pune club, on the way to Chowpati (nucleus mall).

Phone: 2625238

Food: Excellent kababs and biryani. Prepare to wait for half an hour at least on a weekend.
Tip: If you don't get place for a long time, SISA next doors is usually lot less crowded and is a decent compromise.
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

FAASO'S free home delivery

Food: They deliver fast food - Kabab wraps, veggie wraps, paneer wraps, kabab etc. Quality of the food is decent, though it's quite oily most of the times.

Price: Rs. 25-50 per wrap, depending on what you order.

Wanowrie, Pune: 56200345
Model Colony, Pune: 56226806
Baner Road, Pune: 27293940
Aundh: 25888111
Kothrud: 25457304
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

Pizza Hut Delivery J.M. All the fans of desi chinese food, you've been warned - it is NOT the spicy "Indianized" chinese food. :) It's a more bland (like the "real" chinese food that chinese people eat). Pretty much everything I've tried on the menu has been good. Thali is very popular and good value for money. It's a decent place for a takeaway, not the best place to dine in. I personally don't like the plastic feel of the plates at all.
Buyer beware: Some of the punjabi dishes are really hot (spicy), so ask before you order.
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://pune-restaurants.blogspot.com/2006/08/capsicum-restaurant-baner-rd-pune.html' title='Capsicum restaurant - Baner Rd. The restaurant is on your right.
Short Review: If you are a Kabab fan, it doesn't get any better than the Kabab Factory buffet in the evening. Unfortunately this buffet has become a very popular party spot - they rent the whole buffet area for parties in the evening. So if you want to go for the buffet, be smart, call ahead.
I recommend: If you love Kababs (I do), go there even if the buffet is not on. Just order whatever you like from the Kabab menu. Chakori Kabab, Pudine ki seekh are my favorite. If you like heavy sweets, I've heard good things about the phirni. For light sweet eaters, fresh fruit salad with ice cream is good.
Buyer Beware: Main course arrives rather slow. If you are ordering main course, order it right after the Kababs, or better still with the starters.

New Tip (Apr 20, 2007): If you go there for the Kabab buffet, insist on sitting outside in the garden. They do serve buffet inside, but the service is excruciatingly slow. If you are like some of my friends, you'll end up feeling hungry and fed up of waiting.
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

SISA - Some Indian Some Asian

G1, Metropole, Next to Inox Multiplex, Bund Garden Road, Pune - 411 001
Phone: 56229945

Food: The name says it all.
Ambience: Pretty good for a quiet dinner. Not very crowded (like Flags next-door).
Rates: Rs. 500-600 for a three course dinner for two.
Short Review: We went at around 8:30pm and found ourselves to be the only customers there! It is a dimly lit place with decent interior. Soft music (Kenny G) was playing, which suited the mood well. Another night, with a different set of friends, it would have appeared too depressing perhaps! Any ways, food was good, service was decent. Kinda pricy for the quality of food.
I recommend:Sheesh Tauk (this was the highlight of our dinner), Tom Yum soup.
The Sheesh Tauk is a mild, mediterranean Kebab dish which was a welcome change along with the spicy chicken. The Hummus was quite tasty. I think the mediterranean food there holds promise.
Buyer Beware:Chicken in garlic sauce was VERY hot and we were not warned.
Nothing spectacular and nothing you do not get in a regular desi chinese place.

NO NO:Jalapeno poppers were a complete disaster. Obviously neither the chef nor anyone on the management has ever seen or tasted the real thing. God, forgive them for they don't know what they are selling ;). This was more of a cottage cheese + all purpose flour with regular indian mirchi chopped fine made into inch size balls and fried. D-UH!
SUBSCRIBE TO RSS FEED

Up and Above restaurant Pune

Location: Chandani Chauk.
